Terephthalate plasticizer based on a by-product of the production of dimethyl terephthalate and fusel oils
For the synthesis of the plasticizer, a by-product of dimethyl terephthalate production (BPDMTP) produced by “Mogilevkhimvolokno” OJSC and fusel oil, a waste of food ethyl alcohol production, was used as a raw material.
Fusel oil (GOST 17071) is a by-product of ethyl alcohol rectification which is a mixture of alcohols (amyl, isobutyl, n-propyl and ethyl), water and other organic compounds in minor amounts. The main alcohols in the fusel oil are isoamyl alcohols: 3-methyl-1-butanol (more than 80%) and 2-methyl-1-butanol (about 10%).
BPDMTP is used without preliminary processing.
Alcohol fraction (50-70%), which is a colorless liquid and contains mainly С5 isoamyl alcohols, is isolated from fusel oils by fractional distillation.
The resulting plasticizer has a low crystallization temperature, good plasticizing and solvating properties.
